Smart Firefighters PPE: Impact of Phase Change Materials

Considering the high level of heat and flame exposure firefighters encounter while performing their work activities, personal protective equipment (PPE) is utmost importance to enhance safety. Phase change materials (PCMs) are known as advanced able absorb amounts thermal energy, with potential increase performance clothing. In this work, a PCM-vest was developed for first time, its evaluated. A three-stage approach followed: (1) at small scale in laboratory, effect different encapsulated PCMs on multilayer assembly evaluated; (2) essential requirements tests were assessed; (3) simulated urban fire, three PCM-vests (different textiles designs) studied. As main conclusions, significantly affected heating rate assembly, particularly when PCM higher latent used. some cases, transfer index (HTI) doubled by comparison sample without PCMs. drawback expected, cooling time increased. The ensured tests. Through study, positive impact using protection conventional PPE can be highlighted.
